The implications for people, infrastructure and cities across Australia will be enormous. Autonomous vehicles will not only have a significant impact on real estate and the built environment, but also on how we interact socially, how and where we work, and how we use public transport. The advantages alone for demographic groups such as the elderly and those with mobility issues are significant.
Our CBD’s, where land is often scarce and valued at a premium, could particularly stand to benefit. Congestion could be reduced and transport links re-purposed to improve liveability and become less automobile centric. The space for cars on our city streets could become narrower, allowing for increased pedestrianised areas and increased harmonisation with cycle paths. The potential rate of rate of change is not just affecting how people move throughout cities, it is influencing how and where we live.
